Do LinkedIn Messages Disappear?

Written By Alex Cherry

LinkedIn provides a way to send and receive messages you can access in your LinkedIn inbox. You can send and receive messages only to 1st-degree connections. However, you can pay for a LinkedIn premium to use InMail. With a premium subscription, you can send messages to anyone not connected with you on the platform. Most users don’t tend to make the most out of LinkedIn as they don’t understand certain aspects. For example, sometimes people don’t see a message in their inbox and wonder if it has disappeared. This article will help you understand why their LinkedIn messages might disappear.

Do LinkedIn messages disappear?

There are a few reasons why a Linkedin message might disappear. Firstly, you may have archived or deleted the message. Secondly, they might have blocked you, and you can no longer visit their profile or message them. Three, it’s been buried under all your other messages, and you have missed it. You should contact Linkedin support to resolve your issue if none of these are the case.

Tips for managing your LinkedIn messages:

Use filters to prioritize LinkedIn messages

If you receive several messages daily, your inbox may be difficult to manage. When you want to find a specific message, you can always use a search function to look for contacts’ names, organizations, or topics you have discussed. But when you want to prioritize messages, use the LinkedIn filtering option instead.

To access them, open your inbox and click the filter icon on the top right corner of the message box. Choose the type of message you want to view. Let’s look at each type of message you find on LinkedIn.

Unread messages

When you want to go through new messages without any distractions, select Unread. If you want that message to appear unread, even if you have read it, you can change its status. You can do this by clicking the three dots at the top right corner of the conversation window and marking the message as unread from the drop-down.

My Connections

To prioritize messages from people you know, such as your colleagues, or active leads, select My Connections. Using this method, you can quickly respond to ongoing conversations and follow up with people in your network.

InMail

If your best leads come from outside your network, then select InMails. It helps you view offers and requests more efficiently.

Archive

If you want to see messages which you have already removed from your inbox, select Archive. This way, you can review your messages that were less important earlier but now makes sense.

Spam

Occasionally LinkedIn marks messages from prospects as spam. If you want to see those messages, select Spam to retrieve these messages. If you want to respond to any of these messages, you must first move them to your inbox and then send a message.

Mute LinkedIn messages

If you want to stop seeing pitch messages even though you have no interest in them but want to keep them as a connection, LinkedIn has a feature to mute them. You can do this by clicking on the three dots at the top of the conversation. Once you mute the message, you will stop getting the notification when they message you. But you can still see their message if you open the conversation.

You can easily identify the muted conversation as they have a crossed-out speaker icon next to the sender’s name. To unmute, you can open the message and click the blue unmute button at the top right corner of the conversation.

Archive messages

When you are done with your conversation, archiving messages is the best option to save your messages efficiently in a place you can always find them. Archiving helps to move your messages out of your inbox but doesn’t remove them permanently. You can access the archives anytime you want.

Delete messages

If you receive spam or unwanted messages, you may want to delete them. Click on the three dots at the top right corner of the message and select Delete from the drop-down menu.

Block the user

If you get spammy messages from a particular sender, you can simply block them. You can do this by clicking on the three dots at the top of the message and selecting Report/Block. Choose the reason for reporting the message and click submit. After that, the sender won’t be able to message you again.

Activate push notifications for LinkedIn messages

Some of your LinkedIn messages don’t require immediate response while others do. LinkedIn allows you to set up push notifications on your web version of LinkedIn and mobile app. Open your LinkedIn settings and click Communication on the left side menu. Select push and then click Conversations. Ensure that the main Conversation switch is enabled, and then enable the notifications you want to receive.

Set up LinkedIn message preferences

If you get a lot of messages on LinkedIn, you can select Who Can Reach You. You can find this option in your settings under Communications, and you can change the setting and modify the type of messages you want to receive.

Are LinkedIn messages visible to everyone?

How to see old messages on LinkedIn?

You can find the old messages by clicking on the message at the top right of the LinkedIn page and entering their name in the message search bar, which pops up on the left side of the page.
